Millions of low-income seniors and people with disabilities rely on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to pay for their basic needs. Unfortunately, current rules penalize them for saving even modest amounts. The SSI Penalty Elimination Savings Act would modernize these outdated policies, allowing SSI beneficiaries to save for emergencies and their future without losing the critical benefits they need.
The SSI Penalty Elimination Savings Act would raise the asset limits for SSI recipients, allowing them to save more without jeopardizing their benefits. This change will provide much-needed financial stability for low-income seniors and people with disabilities. Today’s cost of living is nearly 2.5 times higher than it was 35 years ago, when the last asset limits were set. Therefore, with each passing year, the asset limit imposes greater challenges on individuals who are in dire need of assistance.
The SSI Penalty Elimination Savings Act (H.R. 5408/S. 2767) has strong bipartisan support, garnering numerous cosponsors from both parties and in both chambers.
