The federally-funded Holocaust Survivor Assistance Program (HSAP) helps ensure that many of the 30,000 to 50,000 Holocaust survivors remaining in the United States are able to stay in their own homes and communities and live with dignity. Most are in their 80s and 90s or older, and tragically, one-third live in poverty.
Through this program, Jewish Federations’ Center on Aging and Trauma supports innovations in person-centered, trauma-informed care for older adults. This program has been so successful that it was expanded to help other older victims of trauma.
It is critical that Congress fund HSAP at $8.5 million to meet the increased costs of supporting Holocaust survivors and other aging populations. The events in Israel on October 7th and the increase in global antisemitism have led to traumatization in Jewish seniors who lived through the horrors of World War II.
